The Power of Probiotics

Probiotics are a hot topic these days. Whether it’s kombucha, kefir, or kimchi, it seems like everyone is talking about different ways to consume “good” gut bacteria and its beneficial properties.

What are probiotics, exactly?
Probiotics are friendly, live microorganisms introduced to the body, that are known for having numerous health benefits. Our digestive tracts host trillions of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics can help replenish depleted good bacteria within the digestive tract (after a round of antibiotics, for example), and also balance good and bad bacteria within the body. An excess of bad bacteria within the body can lead to inflammation or infection. Good bacteria suppresses bad bacteria from multiplying, and therefore aids the immune system in warding off unwanted ailments. A healthy and balanced gut biome is critical for maintaining an efficient digestive system.

How can probiotics help me?
Common conditions treated with probiotics include irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and diarrhea. Probiotics are also known to help with skin conditions, immunity, urinary and vaginal health, and oral health. (WebMD)
